The Five Levels Of Leadership Introduction

June 12, 2026

Most of us can remember a moment when we first stepped into leadership. Perhaps it came with a promotion, a title, or simply the expectation that others would now look to us for direction. There was excitement mixed with uncertainty. Responsibility suddenly felt heavier. Decisions carried greater consequence. However, somewhere beneath the surface lingered the quiet assumption that because we had been entrusted with leadership, we somehow understood what leadership truly was.

Yet experience has a way of humbling us.

What initially appears straightforward soon reveals itself to be far more complex and far more beautiful. We discover that people are not projects. Influence is not automatic. Trust cannot be demanded. Growth cannot be rushed. Consequently, leadership itself is much less about standing above people than it is about walking slowly among them. For many, this realization becomes the beginning of a much deeper journey. Because leadership is not something we arrive at. It is something we grow into.

Consequently, growth by its very nature, is progressive.

Just as children become adults and seeds become trees, influence itself matures over time. It develops in stages. It deepens through seasons. It expands through experiences that shape not merely what we do, but who we become. That is why some leaders possess authority yet struggle to inspire. Others cultivate trust but fail to produce meaningful results. Some achieve remarkable success but never multiply themselves through others. Ultimately, a precious few leave behind a legacy that continues long after their own journey has ended. The difference is not talent alone. Nor is it intelligence.

It is maturity.

Leadership is not a destination. It is a pilgrimage. As a result, every pilgrimage unfolds one step at a time. This is why understanding the progression of leadership matters so deeply. Not because leadership can be reduced to formulas or measured by ladders, but because awareness creates possibility. When we understand where we are, we gain clarity about where we are being invited to grow. We begin to recognize that each stage has its own lessons, its own blessings, and its own limitations. What serves us in one season may not be enough for the next. Because, leadership itself was never intended to remain static.

Neither were we.

The journey begins with Position, where authority is granted and responsibility is accepted. It grows through Permission, where trust transforms relationships. It gains strength through Production, where credibility is established through meaningful results. It multiplies through People Development, where leaders begin raising leaders. Ultimately , at its highest expression, it culminates in a life whose influence outlives its own years—Pinnacle. Yet perhaps the greatest insight hidden within this progression is that the levels themselves are not trophies to be collected.

They are invitations to become.

Leadership is not about climbing higher. It is about growing deeper. It is not about gathering more followers. It is about investing more fully in people. It is not about accumulating influence for ourselves. It is about stewarding influence for the sake of others. Because the heart of leadership has never been extraction.

It has always been investment.

Perhaps, that is why the journey matters so much. Each level teaches something the next level requires. Position teaches responsibility. Permission teaches trust. Production teaches stewardship. People development teaches multiplication. And the pinnacle teaches what may be the most profound lesson of all—that the greatest legacy is not found in what we accomplish…

But in what remains because we lived.

These next reflections are not simply about understanding five levels. They are about understanding ourselves. They are invitations to examine where we are, what we are learning, and who we are becoming. Because leadership is never merely about leading others. It is always, first, about being formed ourselves. In the end, the most important question is not how high we rise. It is who we are becoming while we rise. For leadership, at its very best, is not the pursuit of significance.

It is the faithful stewardship of influence, one life at a time.
